ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The United States Hockey League (USHL) is bringing the top junior hockey in the nation to Rochester for the 2nd annual USHL American Cup Powered by Wegmans from December 1-4 at Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex and Rochester Ice Center. The USHL is proud to partner with Wegmans, a local grocery chain, to put on this specialty event, which features a pair of regular season USHL games and a youth hockey tournament.
The USHL is the only Tier I Junior Hockey league in the United States and is composed of the best 16- to 20-year old hockey players from across the globe. When the USHL comes to Rochester, it will bring with it the Green Bay Gamblers and Youngstown Phantoms, two of the League's 16 Member Clubs. The Phantoms enter the game with four NHL Draft selections including James Fisher (Columbus Blue Jackets, 2022, Round 7, #203) and Reese Laubach (San Jose Sharks, 2022, Round 7, #217) as well as Shane Lachance (Edmonton Oilers, 2021, Round 6, #186) and Tomas Machu (New York Islanders, 2021, Round 7, #221) while the Gamblers have Seattle Kraken prospect Barrett Hall (2022, Round 6, #164) on their roster. The Annual Empire State Showdown youth hockey tournament, produced by MYHockey Tournaments, is set to take place this weekend at Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex bringing over 1,000 ice hockey players and family members into Monroe County. In total, 38 teams representing MI, NY, VA and PA will compete in the three day event.
Based on the Destinations International Economic Impact Calculator, it is estimated that the Empire State Showdown will generate $538,667 in direct visitor spending, $371,834 in indirect spending, for a total economic impact of $910,503. The Empire State Showdown is the fourth tournament in the Iceplex’s hockey tournament season, which features 20 large-scale events occurring through June of 2023. The NGHL is a league dedicated to the promotion and growth of girl’s ice hockey across the United States. This is the National Girls Hockey League’s first event in Rochester, NY.
In total, 25 teams will compete in the three-day event, with MA, MD, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, and VT all being represented. “Girl’s ice hockey has continued to see tremendous growth in the United States, in addition to Rochester, NY,” said Chris Woodworth, Executive Director of the Iceplex. “The National Girls Hockey League is committed to enhancing the overall hockey experience for female athletes, fostering opportunities to pursue a career in hockey.
