Over 1,200 ice hockey players and family members will come together this weekend for the October Madness tournament. The event, which is put on by SuperSeries AAA Hockey, will take place at Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex and runs October 28th through October 30th.
This is the first of two events taking place in Rochester this Winter by the events company based out of Livingston, New Jersey. In total, 32 youth hockey teams will compete, of which 30 teams traveled in from all over North America. This event attracts U.S. teams from NY, PA, MI, CT, TX, MA, NJ, RI, IL, CO, AL, TN and MD, as well as Canadian teams from the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The 30 out of town teams equates to roughly 1,130 out of town guests that will reside in local hotels, dine in local restaurants and shop in local stores over a three day period. Based on the National Association of Sports Commissions Economic Impact Assumptions, this event will have an economic impact on the local community in the range of $320,000 and $520,000. ROCHESTER, NY -- Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex, the area’s largest driver of sports related economic impact, will take a major step toward energy sustainability with a full overhaul of their lighting system. They will be installing state of the art intelligent lighting systems produced by Noribachi and Encelium.
In partnership with Jacomb Lighting (Pittsford, NY), installation will begin immediately and is scheduled to be completed by December 15th. The Iceplex runs multiple Try Hockey For Free events throughout the calendar year. These events are designed for children ages 5 to 9 to try ice hockey at no cost and in a positive environment focused on fun. Participants are provided full equipment and skates at no cost and take to the ice for jam packed, memorable experience. On ice instruction is provided by the Iceplex Hockey staff, along with volunteer coaches and players from the local area. A free post event pizza party will be hosted for all participants. No skating or hockey experience is required, however re-registration is required for all participants as space is limited.
